Durham BID were looking at the benefits of installing a digital communication system in key locations within Durham City Centre. The digital system would make communication higher profile for visitors to Durham, local businesses, local residents and local partnerships. Providing detailed wayfinding routes to each business.
To meet this brief, Beyond Digital designed a custom made, external totem, ensuring the design features blended in with the local historic environment. The totem includes 3 IP rated high bright screens, a mixture between passive and interactive screens.
Businesses can access the system using a web portal where they can update offers and promotions quickly and securely. Advertising has also been sold on a dedicated screen within the totem.
A key aspect of the digital system is its ability to interact with smart phones using bespoke designed QR codes. These launch an html version of the interactive sign to enable users to take information away.
Three of the main features of the sign have been detailed below.
These are displayed once a user selects a business, they are then able to scan the codes using a smart phone app in order to reveal any special offers or to display the Google Map directions.
This allows users to locate businesses, services and key destinations within the Durham BID area, they are then shown a map and the fastest wayfinding route to the destination is plotted on screen.
As the sign is public facing, it was important that it catered to the needs of wheelchair users. In order to make this possible, a disability access button was added to the sign which, when pressed, made the interactive buttons drop down to a level where they would be reachable for any members of the public using a wheelchair.
